SK Chemicals Life Science has strong marketing power especially in the fields of cardiovascular, anti-arthritic, gastrointestinal and anticancer drugs. And our licensing activities are focusing on products and technologies in these fields to strengthen our potential and synchronize with our existing marketing activities.
In the field of gastrointestinal drugs, we have a strong marketing capability for drugs acting on the gastrointestinal tract, which is supported by the good sales performance of Levopride® and Omed® in the market. Levopride® (active ingredient: levo-sulpiride) is a drug which is used for the treatment of functional dyspepsia or nausea/vomiting caused by chemotherapy. In 1997, SK Chemicals Life Science launched Levopride® which it licensed from Abott (previously Knoll which merged with Abott). Its sales volume was about US $11 million in 2003 making it the best-selling gastroprokinetics in Korea. SK Chemicals Life Science has marketed Omed®, an anti-ulcerant whose active ingredient is Omeprazole acting as H+ pump inhibitor. Omed® is among the top 5 anti-ulcerants in the Korean pharmaceuticals market. In addition, SK Chemicals Life Science has successfully exported Omed tab® (Omeprazole) to European countries. Omed® is the first finished product produced in Korea to have passed the rigorous inspection of the German government.
In the field of orthopedics, SK Chemicals Life Science has developed Trast®, a piroxicam patch for the treatment of osteoarthritis and has been successful in marketing it. It is the second best-seller among topical anti-rheumatics in the domestic market. Our R&D researchers have also developed Joins® tablet, the first natural medicine developed in Korea. Joins® tablet has strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects at affected joint areas with fewer adverse effects than existing NSAIDs, so that it can be safely prescribed to older patients or for long-term treatment.
In the field of anti-cancer agents, SK Chemicals Life Science has developed and launched a new anti-cancer agent, ‘Sunpla’ (Heptaplatin; 3rd generation platinum complex) that is the first Korean NCE product that we have been successful in producing by means of our own outstanding R&D activities.
In addition to working to create original drugs that meet medical needs worldwide, SK Chemicals Life Science is actively conducting licensing activities to strengthen its status in each therapeutic area.
